From KL
Fly to Penang (PEN, ~1 hr) then drive ~45–75 min; or drive ~4–5 hrs; or ETS train to Butterworth.
Tip
Use the Grab app for live fares and the Rapid Penang / Moovit app for live bus times.

From Penang International Airport

The airport (PEN) is in Bayan Lepas at the south-east of the island — the opposite corner from Batu Ferringhi, so allow time. Your options:

  • Grab or airport taxi — easiest with luggage; about 45–75 minutes depending on traffic through or around George Town. Grab fares vary; check the app.
  • Rapid Penang bus 102 — runs from the airport through George Town to Batu Ferringhi and on to Teluk Bahang, roughly hourly. Cheap, but slow (1.5–2 hours) and not ideal with big bags.
  • Bus via KOMTAR — take a faster airport bus to KOMTAR in George Town, then change to the frequent 101 up to Batu Ferringhi.

From George Town

This is the easy one. From KOMTAR or the Weld Quay jetty terminal, Rapid Penang bus 101 runs north along the coast through Tanjung Bungah to Batu Ferringhi and Teluk Bahang, roughly every 10–20 minutes from early morning to late evening. It’s inexpensive and scenic, taking about 45–60 minutes.

A Grab is quicker (around 25–40 minutes off-peak) and well worth it in a group or with luggage. Metered taxis exist but Grab is usually cheaper and clearer.

Getting around once you’re here

You may not need transport at all — the hotels, beach, restaurants and night market line one walkable stretch. To reach the spice garden, butterfly farm or Teluk Bahang, hop on bus 101 heading west, or take a Grab. For the hilltop fruit farm, arrange a return ride in advance, as Grab cars can be scarce up there later in the day.

From KL, Langkawi & further afield

From Kuala Lumpur: the fastest way is to fly to Penang International Airport (about an hour) and continue by Grab. You can also drive (around 4–5 hours up the North–South Expressway) or take the ETS train to Butterworth and cross to the island.

From Langkawi: fly to Penang, or take the passenger ferry to George Town, then Grab or bus 101. From Singapore: direct flights to Penang are the simplest option.
